Warum das Mollier-Diagramm?
Why the Mollier Diagram?
Learning goal: You understand which building physics problems the diagram solves, and assess your prior knowledge.
Kontext für Bauingenieure
Context for civil engineers
Schimmel an Außenwänden. Kondenswasser an Fensterscheiben. Überhitzte Büroräume trotz Klimaanlage. Hinter all diesen Problemen steckt dasselbe physikalische Prinzip: der Zustand feuchter Luft.
Mould on exterior walls. Condensation on windows. Overheated offices despite air conditioning. Behind all these problems lies the same physical principle: the state of moist air.
The Mollier h,x-diagram fully visualises this state: how dry or humid air is, what energy it contains, and what happens when it is heated, cooled, or humidified.
Einsatzgebiete: Taupunktberechnung für Wärmebrücken · Auslegung von Lüftungsanlagen · Heizlastberechnung · Kühlkonzepte
Applications: dew point calculation for thermal bridges · ventilation design · heating load calculation · cooling concepts
Luftfeuchtigkeit verstehen
Understanding Humidity
Learning goal: You distinguish absolute humidity x and relative humidity φ and understand the role of temperature.
Zwei Messgrößen, ein Zusammenhang
Two measurements, one relationship
x Absolute Feuchte x [g/kg]: Gramm Wasserdampf pro Kilogramm trockener Luft. Absolute humidity x [g/kg]: grams of water vapour per kilogram of dry air. Changes only when water is added or removed.
Relative humidity φ [%]: ratio to maximum content at this temperature: φ = x / x_s. Changes also when heating/cooling, without water exchange.
Warm air can hold more water vapour than cold air. When cooled to the dew point, φ = 100% → condensation begins.
Das Diagramm Schritt für Schritt
The Diagram Step by Step
Learning goal: You recognise and understand all axes and curve families of the Mollier diagram.
Die vier Zustandsgrößen im Überblick
The four state variables at a glance
T Temperatur T [°C] — die „fühlbare" Wärme der Luft. Im Diagramm: vertikale Achse. Temperature T [°C] — the "sensible" heat of the air. In the diagram: vertical axis.
x Absolute Feuchte x [g/kg] — wie viel Wasserdampf tatsächlich in der Luft steckt. Im Diagramm: horizontale Achse. Absolute humidity x [g/kg] — how much water vapour is actually in the air. In the diagram: horizontal axis.
Relative humidity φ [%] — how "full" the air is relative to its maximum. In the diagram: the curved lines. The 100% curve is the saturation boundary.
Enthalpy h [kJ/kg] — the total energy content of moist air. It consists of sensible heat (temperature) and the evaporation energy stored in the water vapour. That is why moist air contains more energy than dry air at the same temperature! Practically important: the difference between two h-values directly gives the required heating or cooling power per kg of air. In the diagram: diagonal lines.

Learning goal: You can locate an air state in the diagram from two given values and read off the missing ones. 5 correct tasks in a row unlock the next module — one mistake resets the counter!
So funktioniert's
How it works
1. Two state variables are given (e.g. x and φ). 2. Drag the orange point with the mouse to the correct position in the diagram — when close enough, it snaps into place. 3. Read off the missing values and enter them. 4. Check — on success, one streak box lights up.
Zustandsänderungen im Raum
State Changes in a Room
Learning goal: You can trace and predict heating, cooling, humidifying, and ventilating as paths in the diagram.
Das Setup
The setup
We consider the air in a living room in winter. The orange point in the diagram shows the current state of the room air (start: 20 °C, 7.3 g/kg ≈ 50% RH). The buttons change this state — each action corresponds to a real process in the room:
Heating/cooling: only T changes, x stays the same → the point moves vertically. Humidifying (showering, cooking): only x rises → the point moves horizontally to the right. Ventilating: indoor air mixes 50:50 with outdoor air → the point jumps to the middle of the connecting line (mixing line).
???? Außenluft konstant: 2 °C · 3,2 g/kg · φ ≈ 73% ???? Outdoor air constant: 2 °C · 3.2 g/kg · φ ≈ 73%
Predict-then-observe: Before each click, think about which direction the point will move. Then press and compare!
Taupunktausfall an Wänden
Dew Point on Walls
Learning goal: You recognise when and why condensation occurs on wall surfaces and understand mould prevention as an engineering task.
Das Setup
The setup
On the right you see a schematic section through a house: outdoor air → insulation → masonry → interior (no interior insulation). The room air is constant at 20 °C. Due to thermal bridges (e.g. room corners, window reveals), the interior wall surface can be significantly colder than the room air.
In the diagram on the left: the green point is the room air. When this air cools at the wall surface, its state moves vertically downward (x stays the same — the orange/red point). When it reaches the red saturation line (φ = 100%), water condenses: condensation → mould risk.
Experimentiere mit beiden Reglern: Wandtemperatur (= Qualität der Dämmung) und Raumluftfeuchte (= Nutzerverhalten).
Experiment with both sliders: wall temperature (= insulation quality) and room humidity (= occupant behaviour).
